How to Revive Your Stone Bath Mat: Tips and Tricks

How to Revive Your Stone Bath Mat: Tips and Tricks

Have you noticed your stone bath mat is looking a little dull or not drying like it used to? Learning how to revive your stone bath mat means getting comfortable with routine maintenance (but don’t worry, it’s quite easy).

We have a few tips and tricks to keep pesky mold at bay, remove contaminants, and keep your stone bath mat working great year-round.

Why Do Stone Bath Mats Look Dull or Get Clogged?

It may seem odd that your stone bath mat gets dirty, especially if you like to use it after showering. If you’re already clean, where is all the dirtiness coming from?

Stone bath mats work hard to keep your surroundings dry by absorbing water, but sometimes they also soak up dust or dirt. Even showering thoroughly doesn’t guarantee cleanliness, since lingering soap suds, dead skin cells, or oil residue can soak into the mat over time.

How to Freshen Up Your Stone Bath Mat

These cleaning steps give you three benefits in one: they clean up your mat’s appearance, reduce the risk of mold build-up, and restore its fast-drying capabilities.

We recommend giving your stone bath mat a superficial wipedown every few days, then a deeper sanding and cleaning session every few months.

Step #1: Grab a Few Trustworthy Cleaning Tools

Skip the harsh soaps and chemical cleaners to avoid damaging your product. If your stone bath mat is looking a little dull or dirty, cleaning it up is far more effective with a few simple tools:

     Fine-grit sandpaper

     A soft cloth

     Water

If you want to do a superficial wipedown session, make sure your stone bath mat is fully dry. If it’s wet, various contaminants and residue will clump together and be harder to remove.

Step #2: Start Sanding the Surface to Remove Residue

Once your mat is dry, start wiping down the surface with your fine-grit sandpaper in gentle, circular motions. Make sure to move your sandpaper in different directions to fully clear off the surface and start unclogging the mat’s pores.

Sanding can take anywhere from several seconds to several minutes, depending on how much residue you have.

Step #3: Gather Up Lingering Dust or Dirt With a Cloth

While your sandpaper does a great job at loosening up clogs and removing grit, you often have a dusty mess left over. Use a soft cloth to dab up and wipe off anything you’ve kicked loose.

Breathing in too much dust can be harmful to your health (especially if you have asthma). We recommend wearing a snugly-fitting respirator (a medical-grade mask) to avoid dust inhalation.

Step #4: Give Your Stone Bath Mat a Rinse to Top Things Off

After sanding and wiping, giving your stone bath mat a rinse with clean water will help reduce staining and get it ready for several more uses. Make sure to dry it in a shaded, upright position with good airflow (but leave it out of direct sunlight to avoid cracking).

Make sure not to soak or submerge your bath mat, though. A surface rinse is enough.

Step #5: Enjoy Your Stone Bath Mat For Years

Now that you know how to revive your stone bath mat, you’ll be set for a long time. Unlike fabric bath mats that get moldy or rubber bath mats that smell off, diatomaceous earth mats give you several benefits in one place.

With regular maintenance, you can enjoy your purchase for three to five years before needing a replacement.
